One of the most riveting books I have ever read about a true crime case. Mr. Klausner took us not only inside the investigation and shootings, but also inside the extremely disturbed mind of David Berkowitz.I found this book absolutely fascinating and extremely well written.While I have immense sympathy for the pain and terror the victims and their families suffered, I also have sympathy for David Berkowitz, whom I feel did not get justice, since he should have, in my opinion, have been committed to a mental institution for the criminally insane. I have no doubt David Berkowitz was completely and utterly insane at the time of the shootings. He was obviously mentally ill even as a child, and it is heartbreaking this was not realized and treatment given at that time--think of the tremendous amount of suffering and death that could have been avoided.I would have liked to know how Berkowitz fared inside prison, but the author ends his book prior to that. I wonder if David Berkowitz receives any medical treatment for his mental illnesses inside prison? If it is any comfort to those who were hurt by Berkowitz's actions--he also suffered prior to and after his incarceration, due to his mental illness and terrible fears due to hallucinations and delusions.I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in psychology or true crime. Very informative and facinating account of the crimes and capture of DB. Learned a lot about the police investigation, its detectives and the complexities they faced as well as the breaks in the case which lead to DB's caputure that I never knew before. It was written a few short years after the crimes (my copy was from 1981) which allowed the author to interview the individuals involved while the case was still in the forefront of their of their minds.
